Cap/upper head:
This head carving has a 35cm high cap made up of 2 rows of 14 mini human statues per row ( one on top of the other) arranged in rings. The lower row is resting on a semi cowry embroidered ring. At the front view of the cap faces of the bottom row mini human statues are decorated with cowries dating back to the time when cowries were legal tender in some parts of the world. The front view also portrays rounded stomachs of mini human statues decorated, one after the other, with cowries and old and varied coins. All through the mini human statues are joined interlocking hands and feet touching each other.
Face/lower head:
The forehead is decorated with coins. The broad face is decorated with old and varied currency coins. The eye bows and the eye lids are decorated cowries and the section separating the eye bows and eye lids with old and varied coins.
The nose:
The bridge is adorned with cowries and the sides cowries alternating with old and varied currency coins. The tip of the nose also has a coin. The protruding ear lobs, the lips, are decorated with cowries.
The cowries/coins:
The cowries on this figure were used by the ancient people as a legal tender more than a century ago. The coins are old coins from North America, Europe, Africa and Asia with some dating as far back as 1884.
The cowries and coins were once all the wealth that a family took their pride in as they handed from generation to generation until new currencies came and made all their wealth seemed worthless. One of the descendants of this family put together the seemingly worthless wealth of the family including a statue that was recently handed to him in an effort to display how wealthy they had been and the results gave what you now see. It has gone through several hands fetching each owner a fortune. The present owner has put it in the market now to meet up with an important project.
